1. The Social Curriculum is as important as the academic curriculum.
My belief on this particular principle principal is that I fully agree with this statement. I feel that along with learning academics, students need to also learn social etiquette. It is important that our students are learning how to act social so they are ready for the “real-world”. I feel as if just learning academics isn’t enough. A student may be highly intelligent, but if they don’t have the right social skills they still may not be successful.

2. How children learn is as important as what they learn: Process and content go hand in hand.
My take on this guiding principle is that each child is different. This is why the process of how they learn is so important. One child may learn better hands on while on may learn better looking at visuals. Knowing our students and the way they learn will help them gain the knowledge they need because it is put in terms they understand. Students need that differentiation and if it is put in terms they understand. They will feel more confident and will likely be more successful.

3. The greatest cognitive growth occurs through social interaction.
I think that kids learn so much from each other. Kids think of things in different and do things in different ways. They have a unique way of connecting with each other. I like the idea of students teaching each other because it helps both the students learning and the one teaching, because in reality they are both learning. I like this because the students are using common language that they both understand and it puts them in charge of their own learning.

4. To be successful academically and socially, children need a set of social skills: cooperation, assertion, responsibility, empathy, and self-control.
I feel as if all these skills are important for students to become successful. Students learning these social skills through their teachers modeling is important. I feel as if a teacher could do this in several different ways, such as if during a morning meeting she could address a skill and then demonstrate the said skill. She could demonstrate the said skill throughout the day and point it out, or she could demonstrate the opposite of the skills and have students brainstorm better ways to handle the situation and which social skill to use. I think it is important to remember that students cannot tackle each skill in one day. Therefore the process will take time.

5. Knowing the children we teach individually, culturally, and developmentally-is as important as knowing the content we teach.
Knowing each of these items are going to benefit the students in different ways. For example, knowing a child’s individual needs will help with their student choice and their willingness to learn. Knowing children culturally will help to make them feel welcomed in the class. Knowing the kids developmentally will help the teacher to know how to teach their students in all aspects will help us help them succeed and be prepared for the future.

6. Knowing the families of the children we teach and working with them as partners is essential to children’s education.
Knowing the families of the students is going to help bring the parents, students, and teachers together. This connection is going to show the students that many people care about their education and want them to be successful. This also provides teachers the opportunity to see what the student’s life is like at home. It may give the teacher an explanation of why a particular student is acting out in school. I admire this principle because communication with parents is beneficial for the teacher, parents, and students.
