My motivation plan is solely focused on motivating my students to read. This particular plan is meant to intrinsically motivate the students to have a passion for reading and to want read just because they love books and love to read.
Some of the strategies I have for my motivation plan include, free book choice, teaching several reading methods, and not over pushing kids to read. For free book choice, I would allow many opportunities throughout the school year for kids to read their choice of books. When they have their own choice, they get to find books that they are interested in and their passions start connecting with their reading. If they can read about things that they enjoy they will star to enjoy reading. However, they will still need to read the books at their level in order to become a successful reader. Some times where I would let my students have free choice in books would be during library time. For instance the school I am placed at for my six week clinical allows students to check out a choice book and then a book at their level. I would also set aside time in my classroom for students to look at choice books. For example, my cooperating teacher has a whole section on informational texts and fictional books that are choice books for her class. She sets aside different times during the month that the students are able to choose from this section.
The other strategy I had was to teach several methods of reading. This strategy would include teaching the students that they can read the words, look at the pictures, and they can retell the story in their own words. I think that teaching the several methods with help the students not get overwhelmed when they are reading. They will feel relieved when they get to read a book in their own way and they will feel accomplished when they finished the book because they read it themselves. I would let each students know that when reading their choice book they can use these several methods and that each of them are okay to use. I think allowing kids the choice to read the book the way that best fits them will help them enjoy reading more and they will be more willing to read for the fun of it.
I also think that kids should not be over pushed to read. For example, a particular student’s reading level was slowly decreasing and my cooperating teacher was noticing that he was frequently just staring into his book and staring off into the distance. She decided that he should focus on only reading for 15 minutes a night instead of 30 minutes. She compromised with the student that instead of doing two steps a night he should do a solid job reading for 15 minutes. My cooperating teacher noticed that he was becoming discouraged with reading and she really wanted to get him to enjoy reading again. This is her whole philosophy on reading and it is something that I have taken away from her. My philosophy is that I just want my students to have a love for reading and enjoy doing it.
My whole motivation plan includes a choice for students. It allows them to have a choice in the book they are reading and how that are reading it. This plan includes some of the standards that I have previously read about. It includes active learning, and several learning methods. Overall, I believe that student choice in reading is going to give them the intrinsic motivation to become a better reading and to find a love for reading.
